Straney's Light is not only the name of the small, independent group of islands to the southwest of Western Glashia, but also the name of the only city on the largest of the islands. Home to an unknown population of pirates and smugglers, Straney's Light does not fall under the jurisdiction of any of the nations of Western Glashia, Alaretra, or Gallaway, although rumor has it that the rulers of the Kingdoms of Jordyen, Langington, and Aarenki have provided minor assistance to the governing body of Straney's Light from time to time. Despite that, there isn't a signal signed treaty or alliance with Straney's Light and any other nation.
The governing body that rules over Straney's Light is actually one man by the name of Captain Zaras Barbeco, commonly referred to as the Captain. Captain Barbeco has been in power for an unknown period of time, controlling an unknown number of ships and an unknown number of men, although it is said that the Captain's fleet of ships is a match to those of the Jordyen Navy. Many believe there to be a large number of ships in the Captain's fleet, for his ships have been known to sail the trading routes of the waters of the Inner Sea to the Sea of Heredia and into the Sea of Sorrow, and everywhere in between. The only region that seems to have been untouched by the Captain's hand is the mighty Lake Gideon, the waters of which are ruled over by King Durant de Angelosis the Fifth of the Kingdom of Langington and controlled by Nanno Grigsby, the largest independent merchant and trader of Western Glashia, next to Captain Barbeco.
Although trading wars and sea battles between the ships of Captain Barbeco and Nanno Grigsby have been known to spring up on the waters surrounding Western Glashia, it is rumored that the two men are actually good friends, collaborating and combining their efforts when a situation of commerce calls for it. It is also said that Nanno Grigsby is one of the only citizens of Western Glashia to actually set foot on Straney's Light, for the waters around the small grouping of islands are treacherous, and an experienced navigator--like that found within the employment of Captain Barbeco--is needed to successfully traverse the waters and dock at the harbors of Straney's Light safely.
